What your PDF says about you: check it before you send it

Last updated 27 September 2026

You deleted the salary from the offer letter, saved, and sent it. But many programs save a change by adding it to the end of the file, and the old version, salary and all, is still inside. Here is how to see what a PDF really carries before it leaves your hands.

What a PDF can hide

Older versions of the document, with the words you deleted. The name of whoever made it, the program they used and the dates. Comments and notes, which many readers hide. Whole files attached inside, such as a video or a spreadsheet. Layers that are switched off but switch back on in one click. Scripts that run when the file opens. Small page pictures that can still show a page as it was before it was changed.

None of these show on the pages, which is exactly why they get sent by mistake.

Look inside the file

  1. Open Safe to send and drop the PDF. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. Read the list. Each kind of hidden thing has a box of its own, saying what it is, why it matters and what exactly was found - down to the words that were deleted.
  3. Look at the links too. They stay, because they are part of the page, but check each one goes where you expect.

Take out all of it, or only some

  1. To remove everything, press Take it all out.
  2. To keep something - an attached spreadsheet the other person needs, or your name as the author - untick its box first, then press Take out only the ticked ones.
  3. The new file is checked again straight away. It says what is gone, and what was kept because you chose to keep it.
  4. Press Save the clean PDF and send that copy.

Old versions and loose leftovers are always taken out, because saving a clean copy leaves them behind anyway. The pages look exactly as they did, and links and form boxes keep working.

Text under a black box is a different problem

Safe to send removes what is hidden in the file, not what is on the page. If words are covered by a black box drawn on top, they are still on the page, and anyone can copy them. Use Redact PDF for that - see How to black out text in a PDF so it is really gone.
