How to open a PDF
Most of the time you do not need this: every modern browser opens a PDF you double-click. This is for the times the machine you are on does not - a locked-down work computer, an old phone, a browser set up to download PDFs instead of showing them, or a file your reader refuses to open at all.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Use Next and Back, or the arrow keys on your keyboard, to move through it.
- Type a page number in the box to jump straight to it.
- Change the size if the print is small.
One page at a time, on purpose
Each page is drawn only when you reach it, and the one before is thrown away. A four hundred page book therefore opens as fast as a letter and does not fill the memory of a phone. The trade is that moving through it is a page at a time rather than a continuous scroll.
What it will not do
This only reads. It does not change the document, so nothing can be broken by opening it here. If you want to change what is on the page there are tools for that: the words themselves, the page order, a signature, a watermark, page numbers.
A PDF with a password on it cannot be opened here, because the password is what it is for.
Good to know
- Is the file uploaded?
- No. It is opened and drawn by the browser you are holding. Load this page, turn your internet off, and it still works.
- Can I use the arrow keys?
- Yes. Left and right, or up and down, move a page at a time once the document is open.
- Will it open a very large document?
- Yes. Only the page you are looking at is drawn, so the size of the whole document does not matter much.
- Can I open a password-protected PDF?
- No. A password is there to stop exactly that.
