What a PDF can hide

A PDF can carry much more than its pages. When a file is edited and saved again, the old version is often kept inside it, so text you deleted can still be read by anyone who looks.

It can also hold the name of the person who made it, comments, attached files, layers that are switched off, and scripts that run when it opens.

  1. Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
  2. Read the list of what was found, in plain words.
  3. Untick anything you want to keep, then press Take out only the ticked ones. Or press Take it all out.
  4. The clean file is checked again, to prove nothing is left, then press Save the clean PDF.

What stays

The pages look exactly as they did. Links and fillable form boxes are kept, because they are part of what the page shows.

Guides that use this tool

Good to know

Can deleted text really still be in a PDF?
Yes. Many programs save changes by adding them to the end of the file, and leave the old version above. This tool shows which words were removed, and then removes the old versions.
Does it remove black boxes drawn over text?
No. Text under a black box is still on the page. Use Redact PDF for that.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. It is checked and cleaned in your browser.
