How to print a big poster on normal A4 paper
Last updated 27 September 2026
Your printer takes A4 paper, and you need a sign for the door, a map for the wall or a plan big enough to read. You do not need a print shop: print the page in pieces and tape them together.
If your poster is a picture
The poster tool takes a PDF. If what you have is a photo or a JPG, turn it into a one-page PDF first with JPG to PDF.
Make the pieces
- Open Print as a poster and drop the PDF.
- If the PDF has more than one page, choose the page.
- Choose how many sheets across. The finished size of the poster is shown: three sheets across on A4 makes a poster about 55 by 78 centimetres, on nine sheets.
- Choose the paper, and how much the pieces overlap for gluing.
- Press Make the poster, then Save the poster.
Print and put it together
- Print at actual size, or 100%. Do not choose Fit to page, or the pieces will not line up.
- The first page is a small map showing where each sheet goes. Every sheet is labelled with its row and column, like A1 or B2.
- Cut along the marks, lay the sheets out like the map, and tape or glue them together on the back.
Will it be sharp?
Text and drawings in a PDF stay sharp at any size, so a sign or a plan comes out crisp. A photo gets softer the bigger it is printed: it looks fine from a few steps away, which is how posters are read.
