How to split a PDF
Splitting is for when a document holds more than one thing. A forty page scan of a whole folder holds a passport, a contract and six receipts, and each of them belongs in its own file before anybody can send one of them anywhere.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Choose how to cut it. Every page into its own file gives you as many files as there are pages.
- Into pieces of gives you files of a fixed length - five pages each, ten pages each, whatever you set.
- These pages only gives you one file holding exactly the pages you name, written like 1-3, 8, 10-12.
- Press Split. One file saves on its own; several arrive together in a zip.
Writing the page numbers
A dash means everything between, so 4-9 is six pages. A comma starts a new piece, so 1-3, 8 is the first three pages and page eight. Spaces make no difference. The numbers are the page numbers you see in your reader, counting the very first page as one, not the numbers printed on the paper - a report whose first two pages are a cover and a contents page has its "page 1" on the third sheet, and this tool counts sheets.
A number past the end of the document is ignored rather than treated as an error, so 1-500 on a twelve page file simply gives you all twelve.
What comes out
Each piece is a proper PDF holding real copies of its pages, not a link back to the original. The text stays text, the scans stay untouched, and each file opens on its own anywhere.
When there is more than one piece, they arrive in a single zip file so you are not clicking Save forty times. Every operating system in use today opens a zip without anything being installed: double click it on Windows or Mac and the files are there.
Good to know
- Do the pieces lose quality?
- No. The pages are copied exactly, so a split file is indistinguishable from the original pages.
- Can I get one page out of a large PDF?
- Yes. Choose These pages only and type the one number. That is the quickest way to pull a single certificate out of a long scan.
- Why is the total size larger than the original?
- Every piece has to carry its own copy of the fonts and the structure a PDF needs. Split into fifty files, that overhead is paid fifty times.
- Is the file uploaded to split it?
- No. The whole job runs in your browser, which is why it is fast and why a confidential document stays confidential.
