How to check the spelling of a PDF
A PDF has no spelling check of its own, and a mistake is usually found after the file has been sent.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Choose American or British English.
- Leave the box ticked to skip names, which start with a capital.
- Press Check the spelling.
- Read the list. Press Ignore on any word that is right.
- Save the PDF with the words marked, or just fix the original.
Why it marks and does not correct
The words in a PDF are drawn at fixed places, so a longer or shorter word cannot flow the rest of the line along. The fix belongs in the original document. The marked PDF shows each word with a red wavy line and a comment with suggestions, for whoever makes the fix.
The dictionary
It uses the same English word lists as LibreOffice and Firefox. They are fetched from this site the first time you check, and your document never leaves your computer.
Good to know
- Why are some right words on the list?
- Technical words, brand names and new words are often missing from a dictionary. Press Ignore and they are gone from the list and the marks.
- Does it check grammar?
- No, only spelling.
- Is the PDF uploaded?
- No. The check runs in your browser.
