How to sign a PDF
Signing is drawing: you put a line on a page where a line is expected. So this page opens with a pen in your hand and three buttons above the document - draw it, upload a photograph of it, or type. Nothing else, because nothing else is signing.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Scroll to the page with the line on it. Draw signature is already picked and the pointer is a pen.
- Draw your name. A finger on a touch screen or a stylus gives a better signature than a mouse does, and you can clear a bad one and start again.
- To use a photograph of your signature instead, press Upload signature, choose the photo, click where it goes, then drag it onto the line and pull its corner to size it. A photo taken on white paper works best.
- Fill in the date and any printed name with Text while you are here.
- Press Save the PDF.
What this signature is, and what it is not
It is a drawing of your signature on the page, which is what almost everybody means when they say they need to sign a PDF. It is what a scanner would have given you after you signed the paper, without the scanner.
It is not a digital signature in the cryptographic sense. A digital signature is a certificate held by a certificate authority, which proves the file has not been altered since you signed it and proves who signed it. That needs an account and a paid certificate, this site has neither, and it would not be honest to draw a line on a page and call it one.
For almost all everyday paperwork - a lease, a form, a delivery note, a consent slip - a drawn signature is what is being asked for and is what is accepted. If somebody has specifically asked for a certified or qualified electronic signature, they mean the cryptographic kind, and you need a service that issues certificates.
Why nobody sees the document
A signed document is usually the most private one you will handle all week: a contract, a bank form, something with your address on it. Every other free signing site asks you to upload it to their machine first.
This site cannot. The reading, the drawing and the writing all happen in the browser on your own computer, and there is no part of it that sends the file anywhere. You can prove that in five seconds by turning your internet off and signing a document anyway.
Good to know
- Is a drawn signature legally binding?
- In most countries and for most everyday agreements, yes - the law generally cares that you meant to sign. It is not legal advice, and a document that specifically demands a certified electronic signature needs a certificate authority, which this site does not provide.
- Can I keep my signature for next time?
- No, and that is on purpose. Nothing about you is stored here, not even in your own browser, so there is no saved signature for anything to get at. Keep a photograph of it in a file on your computer and place that instead.
- Can somebody move my signature to another document?
- Anybody can copy a drawn signature out of any signed PDF, from any tool. That is the limit of drawn signatures rather than of this one. Only a certificate-based signature ties a name to a particular file.
- Is the document uploaded?
- No. It is read, drawn on and saved by your own browser.
