How to convert a PDF to Excel
A PDF table looks like a grid, but inside the file it is only words drawn at places on a page. This tool reads where each word sits, works out the rows and columns from that, and writes them into cells.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Choose one sheet a page, or everything on one sheet for a table that runs over many pages.
- Press Convert to Excel.
- Read what was found, then press Save the Excel file.
Numbers that stay numbers
Amounts like 1,250.00, 12% or $40 are written into the cells as real numbers, so a SUM or a chart works straight away. Codes such as phone numbers or account numbers with leading zeros are kept as text, so none of their digits are lost.
What it cannot read
A scanned page is a picture, with no words in it for this tool to find. Run it through OCR PDF first, then convert the result. Tables with cells merged across several rows come out with the words in the first cell and the others empty.
Good to know
- Does it open in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets?
- Yes. It writes a normal .xlsx file.
- Are the lines and colours of the table kept?
- No. The rows, columns and values are kept. Borders and shading are left behind, because that is what makes the numbers usable.
- Is the PDF uploaded?
- No. Your browser reads it and writes the spreadsheet.
